Mel Lathouras dressed up as Dolly Parton and performed 9 to 5 with New Orleans
Jazz Band Brunswick Street Parade for One Trick Pony at the Tivoli
I am on the other side of performing at two epic gigs over the weekend that has taken up a lot of my bandwidth (in a good way) over the last few weeks.
One was the One Trick Pony Show at the Tivoli for the Brisbane Comedy Festival. It’s a variety show with so much heart, soul, and talent. Every time I perform, I leave feeling grateful to be a part of the One Trick Pony Family.
This time I dressed up as Dolly Parton – wig and all – and sang 9 to 5 with Brisbane based New Orleans Jazz Band – Brunswick Street Parade. It was quite literally a dream come true. As you may know, Dolly Parton is my guru.

And then I finished the weekend singing a Nana Mouskouri classic - Milise Mou – to 300 people at the Greek Club.
Not only that, the choir I helped create with two incredible female musicians Katerini and Christina and members of the Greek Community – Ellinikes Fones – had its debut. Just when I thought my heart was at total capacity, it grew even more. I still have goosebumps from when we sang the Greek National Anthem and Strose to Stroma Sou.
Now I have to be honest: I ventured off into old patterns around self-doubt leading up to these gigs.
My critical mind went into OVERDRIVE when I heard a recording of myself singing my 9 to 5 arrangement with the New Orleans band at the Bearded Lady. It was a practice run before the show at the Tivoli.
So, this week’s podcast episode is about how I overcame this spiral and empowered myself to become the ‘music producer’ of my sound.
The whole experience has reinforced a lot of the vocal and mind techniques I teach in the studio, so it made me grateful that we have these powerful strategies in our toolbox.
I also delve into tips for experimenting with your voice and learning to be impartial when listening to yourself back in a recording.
